The real match: Barcelona 5–2 Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona beat Rayo Vallecano 5–2 at Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona, on 31 August 2026 (La Liga, matchday 3). Seven goals on a Monday night, a visiting side who led inside twelve minutes and came back again after the break, and a teenager playing at a level nobody can explain.

Goals

How the match unfolded

12' Alvaro Garcia pulls it back and Camello finishes. Rayo lead at the Camp Nou. A neat move down the left, a beautifully weighted pull-back, and the striker sweeps it home. Twelve minutes gone and the champions are behind at home.

19' Raphinha levels it. The response takes seven minutes. The Brazilian is in remarkable form and Barcelona are back on terms almost immediately. The Camp Nou breathes out.

21' Two minutes later, Yamal produces something sublime. His first goal of the campaign, and it is worth the wait: in from the right and curled into the top corner from the edge of the box. Barcelona lead.

HT Half time. Two-one, and Flick has liked what he has seen. An excellent first forty-five from the champions. The second half will be a different match entirely, and not in the way they expect.

51' Lejeune turns it into his own net. Three-one. A cruel one for the Rayo defender. Gordon drives a low ball in from the left and it goes in off him. The Camp Nou thinks the evening is settled, and it is not.

59' Camello heads in his second from a corner. Suddenly it is three-two. Unai Lopez swings in the corner and the striker gets across his marker to head it home. A match that looked settled is alive with half an hour to play.

71' Gordon finds Raphinha, and the cushion is restored. Exactly when Barcelona needed it. Gordon races onto a ball over the top and flicks it back, the Brazilian drills it low across the keeper for his second of the night, and the Camp Nou can relax again.

90' Yamal gets his second on the stroke of ninety. Five-two. The pick of a remarkable night from a nineteen-year-old. Adeyemi cuts it back and he curls it into the bottom corner: his fiftieth goal for the club, at nineteen.
